Data Collection, Reduction & Analysis

Vision Engineering specializes in optical data collection for test and evaluation. Whether it's MWIR imagery of aircraft or laser ranging data from RAM targets, we understand how to collect the data you need. Our personnel have deployed sophisticated optical data collection systems to numerous test ranges, both CONUS and OCONUS, to collect data used for R&D, engineering analysis, and documentation. Our sensors and tracking systems are fully calibrated, making the data we deliver both metrically and radiometrically calibrated. In addition to radiometric and metric data, we also collect test environment data such as: weather data, atmospheric transmission and turbulence (Cn2), and thermal background. Additionally, we offer a full range of data analysis services to convert collected data into clear, actionable information.

Information extraction from video and image data

  • Calibrated Metric Data, including absolute target location
  • Calibrated Radiometric Data, UV through LWIR
  • Target Orientation Data, roll pitch and yaw

We understand the effects of:

  • Camera metric and radiometric calibrations
  • Optical aberrations and telescope/lens design
  • Tracking system metric calibration
  • Atmospheric turbulence and transmission

We have the capability to:

  • Design the collection system
  • Field the collection system
  • Track the target and collect the data
  • Analyze the data and report findings

Sample Work

Deploying optical tracking systems to collect High Energy Laser performance and ‘ground truth’ data.

U.S. Army High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator (HEL MD)

  • Solid State Laser (SSL)
  • Counter Unmanned Airborne Systems (UAS)
  • Counter rocket, artillery and mortar projectiles

Vision Optical Scoring System

  • Stand-alone transportable tracking system
  • Passive optical instruments
  • 20-inch telescope with SWIR camera
  • 10-inch Laser Range Finder SWIR camera plus other optical instruments
  • Measure jitter, drift, bias, scintillation

Using RT Video Analysis (post test) we extracted the target

  • Pitch
  • Yaw

     (Roll was not required)

Analysis utilized a custom algorithm to extract clocking angle and target length from video.

  • VES developed an algorithm to extract the illumination spot size as a function of time.
  • This time series data was used to characterize the atmospheric turbulence between the beam director and target.
  • Beam location and Jitter were also measured.
